description abstractAntioxidant enzymes protect cells against reactive oxygen species. The level of antioxidant enzymes is reduced almost in

cancer cells. The effect of brevinine-2R (B2R) peptide on antioxidant enzyme activities in A549 cell line were investigated

and results compared with glutathione (GSH). Catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase of A549

extract cells had their most activities in treated cells at 4.8 μM of B2R and 9.5 μM of GSH for 24 h. Cell attachment was also

increased in the presence of B2R and GSH peptide. Thiol status, antioxidant capacity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) of

the treated A549 cells were measured. B2R showed its most ROS level, antioxidant capacity and thiol status in the treated

cells at 4.8 μM of peptide. B2R peptide like GSH has cytoprotective effect on A549 cells by strengthening the cellular antioxidant

system thereby confirming potential pharmaceutical property of the peptide
