Abstract: Polystyreneresinwascovalentlyfunctionalizedwithdiethanolamineandthendecoratedwithmagnetite
nanoparticles byanovelandsimpleco-precipitationmethodusingiron(II)sulfateasprecursor.The
products werecharacterizedbyFouriertransforminfraredspectroscopy,elementalanalysis,X-ray
diffraction, Mössbauerspectroscopy, field-emission scanningelectronmicroscopyandvibratingsample
magnetometer.Adsorptionof p-toluic acid(p-TA)ontomagnetite-decoratedpolystyrene(MAG-PS)was
studied andcomparedwiththatofdiethanolamine-functionalizedpolystyreneandacommercialanion
exchangeresin.Resultsshowedthatthemagnetitenanoparticleswithanaveragesizeof20.4nmwere
successfully formedonthesurfaceofpolystyreneresin,andMAG-PSwasexhibitedhighaffinity forthe
removalof p-TA.
